Practice holding scissors safely and cutting paper slowly
💬 Before Using Scissors
Today, we will practice using scissors. Scissors are tools for snip-snip cutting paper. When you use scissors, always do it together with a grown-up. We do not run with them or point them at people.
🤔 When you use scissors, who should you use them with?
💬 How to Hold Scissors
We sit down when we hold scissors. Put your thumb in the top hole. Put your other fingers in the bottom hole. Keep your thumb on top, and try opening and closing: open, shut, open, shut.
🤔 Does your thumb go on top or on the bottom? Let’s check together.
💬 Slowly, Snip Snip
Now, let’s try cutting the paper. Open and shut the scissors: snip, snip, snip. You do not need to hurry. Let’s move slowly along the line: snip, snip. Keep the hand holding the paper away from the scissors.
🤔 When you cut slowly, it is easier to stay on the line. Where are you cutting now?
💬 When You’re Done, Clean Up
Hooray! You cut the paper. When you are done using scissors, close them with a click. Put the scissors in their case or in their special place. Gather the paper scraps and clean up. Let’s practice slowly again next time.
🤔 At the end, what should you do to the scissors before putting them away?
