Fights and Making Up
Help young children understand how to calm their feelings, use words to communicate, and make up after a fight
💬 What is a fight?
A fight is when feelings bump into each other. Sometimes we think, “I want to use it,” or “I don’t like that.” Even if you have a fight, you can make up afterward.
🤔 When you want to use the same toy as someone else, how do you feel?
💬 First, calm down
When you feel angry, first stop. Do not hit or push with your hands. If you breathe slowly, you will feel a little calmer.
🤔 When you feel angry, shall we try breathing slowly together?
💬 Use words to tell your feelings
We use words to tell our feelings. You can say, “I didn’t like that,” or “Please let me use it.” Listen to the other person until they are finished too.
🤔 When you want to say, “I didn’t like that,” what kind of voice makes it easier to understand?
💬 Let’s make up
If you did something wrong, say, “I’m sorry.” After listening to the other person’s feelings, sometimes you can say, “It’s okay.” When you take turns, you can play together again.
🤔 How do you feel after making up?
