Taking a walk with a baby required far more preparation than I had imagined. Diapers, a change of clothes, a blanket, a drink, a hat. We were only walking around the neighborhood, but it felt almost like a little trip. By the time we finally made it out the door, I was already a little tired. Even so, when the baby saw the outdoor light and started kicking their feet, I felt like saying, “Shall we give it a try?”

Soon after we started walking, people came toward us on a narrow sidewalk. A stroller takes up this much space? When I thought that, I suddenly felt almost apologetic. I tried to move to the side, but there was a curb, and I couldn't maneuver it well. The baby, unaware of my panic, was gazing steadily up at the sky from inside the stroller.

Just then, the person coming toward us moved a little to the side and smiled, saying, “Go ahead.” The person with the bicycle also stopped and waited without hurrying us. In front of a small shop, a staff member held the door for us and said, “Your baby looks so comfortable.” All that happened was that we were able to pass along the sidewalk, but the tension in my chest suddenly eased.

By the time we reached the park, the baby seemed comforted by the rocking of the stroller and began to doze off. I stopped beside a bench and remembered again and again the “Go ahead” and “How cute.” When you're raising a child, you tend to tense up, trying not to bother anyone and trying not to let the baby cry. But that day, I learned that there are people in the world who watch over us more warmly than I had thought.
