A heartwarming everyday memory of a 2-year-old bringing the same picture book almost every day, and a parent feeling both puzzled and reassured by this sign of growth
💬 That Picture Book Again Today
In the evening, while I was folding laundry, my child came toddling over to me. What they were holding in both hands was their favorite picture book—the same one we read yesterday, and the day before that. There were other picture books on the shelf, but they always chose the same one. When I couldn’t help asking, “This one again today?” my child smiled and placed the book on my lap.
🤔 Have you ever thought, “Again?” when your child kept choosing the same game or the same picture book?
💬 I Tried Suggesting a Different Book, But...
At some point, I lost count of how many times we had read it, so I tried taking out a different picture book. “How about this one? There’s a bear in it,” I suggested, trying to make it sound fun. But my child shook their head and hugged the usual picture book tightly. Their serious expression was so funny that, in the end, we turned the same pages once again.
💬 They Had Learned to Say It First
As I started reading, my child leaned forward a little at the usual scene. Before I could finish the words, my child called out, “Peekaboo!” ahead of me. They seemed to remember the timing for turning the pages and even what picture would come next. I realized that, during all those times they had brought me the same book, little joys had been building up inside them.
🤔 Have you ever been surprised to find that your child had somehow remembered something you had been repeating without thinking much about it?
💬 A Tattered Book Becomes a Treasure
At night, before bed, my child brought the same picture book again. The corners of the cover were a little bent, and the pages showed marks from being turned again and again. When we finished reading, my child closed their eyes beside the book, looking reassured. The book I had thought of as “the same book again” had, before I knew it, become a treasure filled with the time we had spent together.
