“The First Newborn Bath” explained in 4 pictures
Free printable Parenting Diary
A family memory of parents gradually getting used to bathing their newborn baby, even as they felt nervous each time
💬 The living room before bath time becomes a tiny strategy meeting
After we left the hospital and came home, the first thing that felt like a huge hurdle was the newborn bath. The baby bath, gauze, clothes, towels. We were sure we had everything, but it still felt like we had forgotten something, so we checked again and again. The baby knew nothing of our worries and slept peacefully. Looking at that tiny sleeping face, we were the only ones as nervous as if we were about to take an exam.
🤔 On the day of your baby’s first bath, did you ever feel exhausted just from getting everything ready?
💬 So tiny our hands trembled
When we finally put the baby into the warm water, their body felt much smaller and softer than I had imagined. “Are we supporting the neck?” “Where’s the gauze?” “How do we wash the back again?” My partner and I couldn’t stop quietly checking with each other. When the baby cried even a little, it felt like the sound of my own heartbeat grew louder too.
💬 Things don’t go according to plan
Even if we meant to follow the steps exactly, real life rarely went that smoothly. After lifting the baby out of the water, we suddenly couldn’t tell which way the undershirt went, or the diaper we had prepared was just a little too far away. The baby cried, the parents panicked, and it felt like time inside the room had been put on fast-forward. Still, when we saw that tiny face wrapped in a towel at the end, the two of us couldn’t help laughing and saying, “We did it...!”
🤔 Have you ever memorized the steps for baby care, only to panic when it was time to actually do it?
💬 Little by little, into our family’s rhythm
After doing it for several days, we gradually began to understand the flow. Some days the baby cried, and some days they narrowed their eyes as if it felt nice. We still felt nervous, but our hands no longer trembled as much as they had on the first day. Maybe it wasn’t only the baby who got used to bath time, but also us, who had only just become parents.
