“I Peeled the Banana” explained in 4 pictures
Free printable Parenting Diary
A morning moment when a 2-year-old child peels a banana by themselves for the first time, showing a small step toward independence and a parent's mixed feelings
💬 The Usual Morning, the Usual Banana
At breakfast time, bananas often make an appearance in our home. Even on rushed days, if I peel one and serve it, my child will eat it—a truly helpful food for a parent. That morning, just like always, I was about to peel it when my child grabbed the banana tightly. Then, in a voice still a little babyish, they said, “By myself.”
🤔 Have you ever felt a little unsure when your child's “I want to do it myself” started on a busy morning?
💬 Just Watching Is Surprisingly Hard
As my child tried to pinch the tip of the banana, their fingers slipped again and again. I started to say, “You do it like this...” but swallowed my words. If I helped, it would be over in a second, but my child was completely serious. Watching the morning clock, I kept thinking to myself, “You can do it—but please hurry.”
💬 It Peeled, But Not Quite How I Expected
After struggling for a while, the peel finally came off in one big flap. The banana was a little squashed, and the peel drooped down onto the table. But my child said, with a face shining with pride, “I peeled it!” Once I heard that voice, the shape of the banana didn't matter anymore.
🤔 Have you ever laughed because something your child proudly showed you after saying “I did it!” was different from what you had imagined?
💬 A Small Banana That Looked Like Growth
My child ate the banana they had peeled by themselves more slowly than usual. As I looked at the peel on the table and their slightly sticky hands, I laughed with a sigh. The one banana I had peeled as a matter of course until yesterday, today my child peeled by themselves. It was such a small thing, and yet it felt like the morning when I began preparing to let go, little by little.
