Jack and the Beanstalk

Jack lived with his mother, just the two of them. One day, Jack decided to take their cow to town. Then, on the road, he met a mysterious old man. The old man said, “These beans are not ordinary beans. They are magical beans.” Jack traded the cow for the magic beans and went home.

🤔 How do you think Jack felt when he saw the sparkling beans? Was he surprised? Was he excited?

Jack’s mother was surprised when she saw the beans. “Well, they look like ordinary beans to me.” The beans fell plop into the garden. The next morning, when Jack looked outside... What a surprise! The beanstalk had grown higher and higher, all the way up into the sky. Jack said, “I wonder what is above the clouds?”

🤔 If there were a beanstalk this big, would you want to climb it? Or would you rather look at it from below?

Jack climbed the beanstalk, heave-ho, heave-ho. When he reached above the clouds, there was a big castle. There was a very, very big giant there. The giant walked with a thump, thump. Jack was surprised and quietly hid. In the castle, there was a hen that laid golden eggs and a harp that made beautiful music.

Jack hurried down the beanstalk, bringing the hen and the harp with him. The giant came chasing after him, so Jack was very surprised. But Jack was able to return home safely. Then the mysterious beanstalk grew smaller and smaller, and no one could go up to the sky anymore. Thanks to the golden eggs, Jack and his mother no longer had to worry about having enough food. Jack thought, “Even when something mysterious happens, I should stay calm and cherish my family.”
